Several hours later, the sun was setting. The scene was finally cleared, and traffic flowed again. Both Chief Rodriguez and Amanda declined medical care.

A tow truck driver gave Amanda a form to sign. “Can you take it to the parking lot behind the travel agency building?” Maybe if it was there, she could still use it for grooming while she tried to come up with the money for repairs.

Detective Kim stopped the driver. “No. Take it to the police lot.”

“What? I told you it wasn’t my fault.” Amanda threw up her hands.

Detective Kim gave her a steady look. “We found evidence that someone did tamper with your brakes. We just need a little time to learn the full extent of what happened.”

Suddenly, all the adrenaline she had been running on disappeared, and Amanda sagged into Ben’s side.

“Let me retrieve my car from the marina, and we can get some food. Then I’ll take you home.” Ben squeezed her shoulder.

“Take-out, please. I don’t think I have enough left in me to sit at a table. I just want to curl up under a blanket.”

“You stay here. I’ll be right back with my car.”

Suddenly, Amanda didn’t want to be left alone. She felt too vulnerable. The street was emptying, and the light breeze blowing had turned chilly as the sun set. “I’ll go with you. I don’t want to stay here.”

They walked the first few blocks in silence. A vibrant sunset peaked between houses, turning the ocean shades of glimmery oranges and reds. Trees became dark shapes against the sky.

“Why would someone tamper with my brakes? Were they trying to hurt us?” Amanda shivered and grabbed Ben’s arm as she looked around the empty streets.

“Us?” Ben tugged on her jacket sleeve as she weaved too close to the curb.

“Grok and me.” She didn’t see Ben’s frown as she stepped off the sidewalk and into the road to skirt a car parked half in the street.

“Who would have a reason to mess with your brakes?” Ben pulled her across the street as the sidewalk disappeared on one side and turned up on the other.

“That’s what I don’t know.”

“After our conversation with Silver, you said you had to find Detective Kim. You took off without explaining why.”

“Robin lied about her alibi, and she was sneaking onto boats. There’s something going on with her.”

“But you don’t have any evidence or motive. The police are never going to take you seriously without any proof. And don’t you think they would have checked the alibis and known that someone was lying?” Ben turned into the marina parking lot.

“I thought so, but it didn’t look like Detective Kim knew about Jack being with Silver. What if Robin knew I was on to something and tampered with my brakes?” Amanda stopped beside Ben’s car.

“But she was with you most of the afternoon. When would she have had time to do that?” Ben searched his pockets then planted a palm against his forehead. “I forgot. I have to go to the boat to get my keys.
